In social today we presented our Renaissance people biography's. Did you know that,

Today was our last day to work on our time lines.
If we don't have them done we won't be able to go to volley ball tomorrow.

During our study of the middle ages I learned two things, 1) all about the steps to become a knight!! :P the first was a page, second step was a squire, and the third step was a knight. 2) What knights did in their spare time ex. They had plays, played music, danced, sang, children played tag, chess and checkers!

My one question is... Is the church now as powerful as it was back then? I hope you enjoyed reading our blog!!! :D

Tuesday, Otober 27, 2009- Leslie

Today we worked on our time lines during class. They are due Thursday. Do them neat because we will be having an open book test on them sometime soon. Something interesting that I learned about the Middle Ages is that the Middle Ages got its name because it is between the time of the fall of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance. I also learned that Medieval monks spent many hours illustrating books by hand. This writing was called Illuminated Manuscripts. I would like to learn whether the Black Death still exists today. If so, does it still kill as many people as it did during the Middle Ages?

Monday, October 26th, 2009 - Samantha

Welcome back to our Blog:)

At the beginning of September we started to learn about the Middle Ages. It was lots of fun. We watched three movies. We had a Medieval Feast. The boys made shields, and the girls made hats. Did you know that back then some of the fashion included woman shaving their foreheads. At our feast we dressed up. The boys wore tights, and the girls wore dresses. We ate salad, stew, cheese, garlic sausage, and dumplings. We ate out of bread bowls, and only ate with knives. It was difficult! We had our test and right now we are working on our Modern World Time line.

The time line is due Thursday, October 29th, 2009.

Happy Halloween!!

Trip To Winnipeg! By: Jackie

On April 29th, our grade 7/8 class went to Winnipeg for a visit to the Holocaust. We had a holocaust survivor talk to us about her story. It was VERY interesting and I liked the part where she said she had went to a farmer's house for dinner and then when they went back to there house it looked like it was on fire but it was actually a full moon shining through their house. After that we went to eat lunch at Assiniboine Park. When everyone was done eating we got to play around the park a little. Later on we went to the Polo Park Mall to go shopping. We stayed there for an hour or so. It was lots of fun. I would like to go again sometime soon because it was just that fun!

Holocaust Museum!!!!!! post by Weaselfan (of course)

On April 29Th, the grade 5-8's traveled to Winnipeg to hear a survivor's story of the Holocaust. It wasn't anything like I was expecting. I was thinking it would be one of those museums where you wander in, get the little pamphlets with random info, check out some old things and get snippets of the history. But instead, we imitated the Jews on a train, being transported to a concentration camp, squishing ourselves into a narrow corner, with actual boxcar doors. After a brief introduction, we were led through the doors to hear Mrs. Franco, the survivor, who was very interesting to listen to, and her story of course was riveting.
After the Holocaust Museum, we went to the Imax to see Under the Sea 3D, which would have been soooooo real if it weren't for all the people in front of me clawing at the picture. (I'll forgive them.)
All in all, the Winnipeg trip was pretty cool. I really enjoyed the Holocaust Museum. Thank you all!

Her Mom and Aunt and Grandma and Grandpa were survivors of the Holocaust, then an actual survivor of the Holocaust talked to us about her experience!! Wow, she went through alot. We went to the IMax we watched Under the Sea 3D. Dude, the screen was humongous and it felt like the fish were right in front of you!!!!!!!!!!! After that we went shopping at Polo Park. I wanted to get new dirt bike gloves but there was no dirt bike or Fox store, so then I just got a DC hat from West 49!!!!!! It was soooooooooo fun. We got home at about 10:00.

April 21, 2009- By: Leslie Friesen

Today we found out that the Great Wall of China is not only 6700 kilometers long. Using a GPS system, scientists saw more of the Wall from space. Scientists believe the Wall was not seen earlier because it was covered in sand from sandstorms. They found about 1800 more kilometers. That means the wall is about 8500 kilometers long!! Think of all the artifacts that will be found. Seeing as they are buried in sand, they will be very well preserved.

We worked on our timelines, today. Remember they are due on Friday!

We are very excited that Reston Collegiate has been commenting on our blog! Thank you Reston!

Congratulations Grade7/8

All Grade7/8 Ancient China group project presentations are complete!

Good for you Grade 7/8s!!

You persevered(even when technology did not cooperate),you were solution focused and the end results were you became familiar with the technology needed to produce movies and or photo stories or to add some sound track and or music to your power points!!

Your pop quiz also showed that you even learned some of the important and interesting facts about Ancient China in the process!

Other skills learned included how important it is to time manage when preparing a project: how important it is to break a project down and work cooperatively with a group of people to produce and present one final end product!

As the wise ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius says:

"I hear, and I forget. I see, and I remember. I do, and I understand."

Setting Criteria for a Multimedia Project: China

Assignment: You will create a multimedia project on China that incorporates all the textbook topics (for example: religion, way of life, map, culture, contributions, etc.) You may choose the software that works best for your project, such as Windows Movie Maker or PhotoStory. After viewing the sample video on the Indus Valley, you provided some great feedback on what that student did well and what the student could have done better. As a class, we will set criteria for our China presentations. In a comment, please list three things you need to do or include to make a quality China multimedia presentation. For example, you might say that, "The font is easy to read and shows up on different backgrounds."

Light, Camera, ACTION!

One possibility for our next unit of study (China) may be making a video about a certain topic. Here is an example of a video a student created about the Indus Valley. After viewing the video, please leave a comment detailing strengths and weaknesses of this student's work. What criteria would we need to set for a good world history video?

Welcome to Our Blog!

Our current unit of study in World History is the Indus River Valley civilization. We are learning about the history of the people, their religions, and way of life. Blogs are a wonderful tool for sharing information and collaborating with people via technology around the world. After viewing the embedded video, please leave a comment with your suggestions for how we can use this blog in Grades 7 and 8 Social Studies.
