  • Authorities in the southwest Missouri city of Joplin are starting to assess damage done by a massive tornado that killed over 115 people on the weekend. It is the worst tornado to have hit the US in 60 years. Recovery efforts continue today amidst unsettled weather i.e rain, hail, high winds and the possibility of more tornadoes.
  • A new study indicates that autistic people see and understand symmetry better than those
    without autism.
  • An animal thought to be part timber wolf has been stalking Bowen Island just off the coast of Vancouver for about 6 months-praying mainly on dogs and cats.

- Dikes by Portage la Prairie were cut creating a controlled breach. Only 4 houses have been affected by the breach. Farmers are unhappy with temporary accommodations.

- Two men fell into Assiniboine River at Winnipeg while boating. One man has drowned and another man is facing charges.

- 65th Anniversary in Israel was disastrous. 25 people were killed and 28 people were injured.

- Bin Laden supporters were protesting against Americans.

- Play Station is back in Business and Sony will try and improve there security system.

- Four Canadian soldiers were injured when their helicopter crashed in Afghanistan.

- Mr.Hartman is engaged!!!!

- On May 12 Manitoba celebrated its 141st birthday.

- Assiniboine River is expected to crest between today and Wednesday in Brandon.

-NHL Playoffs are now in semi-finals.

- Finland won the World Championship in Hockey.

- Manitobans are starting to receive their MPI cheques.

  • The Flood: City of Brandon declared a state of emergency yesterday due to flooding of the Assiniboine River which rose 1/2 meter since Friday.
  • Homes in the area of the river have been ordered to evacuate, businesses have been forced to move, Kirkaldy school is closed (school at BU). A man was driving on Grand Valley Road when his vehicle stalled and he had to be rescued. He is in hospital and there is talk that he may be charged because the road was closed. The army has been called in to help raise the level of existing sandbags and to create new barriers to try to prevent overland flooding. OLCS will not be going swimming at the Sportsplex until further notice due to flooding.
  • Measles are on the rise due to people not getting the vaccine.
  • A plane crashed in Indonesia, at least 15 lives were lost. Safety concerns are possible cause.
  • Fossilized ant- size of humming bird enlarger similar to European species was discovered recently in N.A.
  • OLCS students painted a mural last week with the help of the artist the school. Allison Moore. It turned out exceptionally well!
  • 3000 homes were evacuated in Quebec due to the Richeleu River.
  • Egypt-Christians and Muslims are clashing. The army has been called in to help settle!
  • In Pakistan authorities are refusing to allow Bin Ladin's wives to be interviewed.
  • Rita Chretien was found in Nevada after 7 weeks in a vehicle. Her husband is still missing.

  • Obama announced to the world that U.S. Troops stormed a compound in Pakistan. A firefight broke out and Osama Bin Ladin, the mastermind behind 9-11 attacks was killed.
  • A major spring storm hit SW MB closing highways for many hours and increasing flood waters.
  • April 29, OLCS gr 6-8 participated in" Student Vote." Results were as follows:
Conservative 15
NDP 10
Green 9
Liberal 0
Resulting in a Conservative win.
  • Prince William marries Kate Middleton. Many OLCS students and staff watched this historical event along with 2 billion people worldwide.
  • May 2, Canadians went to the polls to elect Canada's new Federal Government. A conservative majority was elected with Stephen Harper as Prime Minister. The NDP is now the official opposition with over 100 seats. Green Party won their first ever seat
  • Assiniboine River will crest soon.
  • Playstation Network has been down for 3 weeks. The hackers can access credit card info. As a result, people are canceling credit cards
  • 2 weeks ago Kohen helped sand-bag at Cherry Point.
