December 7/2012

-Mrs.Caldwell was chosen to attend the Microsoft Global Forum in Prague. She left Saturday Nov.23 and she returned Sunday Dec.2. She did a great job, and placed as the first runner up! Great job!

-Prince Williams wife Kate is expecting the couples first baby.

-On Dec.6 Oak Lake Community School held their annual Christmas concert. We also had a penny drive, please remember to drop off your spare change at the school.

-On Dec.2 AB went to Buck Night in Brandon. AB won a 300 magnum in a gun draw.

-After weeks of discussion the idea made the party Quebecois to get rid of the maple leaf as a provincial symbol in Quebec was voted down by twelve votes on Tues. Dec.4.

-On Fri. Nov.30/2012 scientists discovered how to find the age of lobsters. Just like a tree, by counting the rings on the antenna.

Dec 3rd and 4th OLCS student council excecutive travelled to Brandon to receive a MB. conservation award and attend sessions. Mrs.Masson and Ms.Lees accompanied the students. Sessions attended included video projects prepared by grade 7-9 students, Brandon University and ACC students. Dr.Suzuki presented to approx. 1000 people with his enviromental message. He is an award winning scientist/enviromental activist:
-Humans have existed for 100, 000 years
- 1 billion people on earth. We need air, H2O. land to keep us alive. Every country is trying to use 88% of land for humans and 12% of land for others. Sunlight drives light on earth - Photosynthesis. Humans are consumers of stuff/use the planet and dump waste. Humans are a major part of catastrophes floods, oil spills, hurricanes
 Spotted owl- 20 species now 6 species- others in danger is Polar bears, Pollock and salmon.
People were hunters and gatherers then became farmers and now 80-85% of people moved to big cities. Their highest piority is to get things they want but dont need.
-Alaska - carribou calve, and oil exist underground.
-Air- garbage can. Humans 60-70% H2O.

~ On Saturday, November 17th, 2012, players from the NHL players association faced off against Winnipeg Police Officers for charity. 

~ On November 16th, 2012, J.R.H. was born. She is a happy, healthy baby cousin for C.F. C. looks forward to meeting her. 

~ A plane crash outside of Snow Lake, MB killed a pilot and wounded 7 passengers on Sunday, November 18th. The plane departed out of Snow Lake, with Winnipeg as a destination. 

~ On Friday, November 16th, 2012 Twinkie Produce, Hostess Brands Inc. announced that they would be closing down and ending the product line after 82 years. 

~ The Clippers are being acknowledged for their amazing play called a punt, punt, in their game on October 30th against the Vincent Massey Collegiate Trojans.

- OLCS gr.7/8 student council members attended WE Day in Winnipeg at the MTS centre, Oct. 30/12!

Some hilights from the day were:
- Each person received a necklace with a water droplet and at a certain time they have lit, this symbolized that each person like the water droplet can make a diffrence in the world.
- Every person at WE day recieved a special bag to collect pennies for 1 person for the rest of their lifes to have fresh water to drink. The idea is to have the largest pennie drive ever! WE day will be an international initiative.

- Spencer West described his climb of Mt. Kilamajaro and how he proved doctors wrong; when he was born with a genetic disease and had to have his legs ampatated at age 5. He was not expected to be anything! He now motivates and fundraises to make a diffrence in the world for others.
- Robb Nash singer and song writer told his story of a near fatal car accident where he was declared dead and survived. He has been working with youth who are in prison and discovering their talents and helping them turn their lifes around.
- There were amazing performers i.e ribbon acrobatics, Shawn Desman, Lights, Victoria Duffield, All star weekend, Tyler Shaw.

- Canada's women's soccer Captain Christine Sinclair was suspended for four games and fined $3500 last week for unsportsmanlike behavior at the London 2012 Summer Olympics.

- On Sunday, Oct. 14th, Felix Baumgartner makes a death defying free fall which broke the sound barrier.  It lasted 9 minutes and he fell at the speed of 1342.8 km per hour.

- After nine years as Ontario's premier, Dalton Mcguingty will step down as Ontario's premier.

- 19 year old Brandon Wheat king forward Jens Meileur is having the best start of his WHL career.  Meileur is part of the reason they have a 5-3 start.

On Oct.14  Kerri Wilson had a fundraiser to raise money for her to get surgery for her MS.  This fundraiser raised $11 600 and now she has $17 600 and can afford the surgery in California.

- On September 25, on Tuesday at 1:56 am a fire started at the Rocanville mine and lasted about 10 hours. The fire caused an explosion which trapped 20 workers for 16 hours. All workers made it to the surface safely.
-Alberta Premier Alison Redford says that she stands behind the provinces beef, even after the recent outbreak of E.coli in some of Alberta beef products.
- On Sunday, Sept 30, five hundred people ran for the Canadian breast Cancer Foundations CIBC Run for the cure, raising $100 210 that will go towards the Breast Cancer research.  
- April 1/12 Troy Adams is on a nine month journey across Canada he is making awareness of how serious brain injuries are.

-A new study has been announced to benefits those who have MS. Winnipeg is one of the four cities to participate in this national trial. Recruitment for participants will begin in November, 2012 in Vancouver and Montreal. There will be 100 participants, 25 from each city.
 
 
- A new device that cools and alters your body tempature is all the rage for people suffering from heat stroke.
 
 
- 35 year old Korean singer Psy is climbing the charts with his song Gangnam Style, being the first Korean singer that has ever climbed the British singles chart.

On September 26, 2012 the Oil Capitals had the home opener and they won 4-2. The Oil Capitals  are off to a great start to their season with a 2-1 record.

Some Facebook users are upset that old private messages are now appearing on users timelines. 

Canadians are spending more and more money on things they want. Majority of Canadians surveyed by The Bank of Montreal say that they shop to cheer themselves up and mood-lifting impulse purchases cost Canadians $3,720 annually.

 The Edmonton Oilers are  actually thinking about moving to Seattle people don't think an NHL team will be able to stay in Seattle because they will have to pay for 5 teams.

In Winnipeg a museum was given strands of a rope, that was believed to be the rope used to hang Louis Riel.

-On Sept.16/2012, Thousands of people all gathered in Coquitlam BC for the annual Terry Fox run.

-Opportunity Rover has detected a blueberry like sphere on the planet mars. This is a possible explanation of life on Mars.

-Manitoba might have another choice when they go to vote. They call themselves Manitoba Party Moniker. It is made up of 30-40 people, some who are former elected officials.

-700 goats were let out onto a 17000-acre community pasture in Humbolt, Sask. to control and push back Wolf Willows and Poplar trees taking over the land.

-OLCS received a thank you from Katheryn Buckley and the orphanage in Haiti that we sponsored school supplies to last school year.

-On Saturday Sept.1 The Lowell and Eileen Winters farm celebrated their 50th anniversary. It started at 6:30pm and lasted until 2:30am!

-The NHL will have another lock out season. The players are asking management for more money and management is saying NO! Lots of players will go to Europe to play including Alexander Ovechkin (captain for the Washington capitols).  All the Minnesota wild fans will get 10% of their ticket money back.

-Fire in Rossburn on Saturday claims lives of an elderly couple. It was caused by an electric heater.

-iPhone 5 topped 2 million orders in the first 24  hours. The iPhone 5 is bigger, thinner, and faster. the iPhone 5 is also more money. The 16 GB is $699, the 32 GB is $799 and $899 for 64 GB. 
-The Winnipeg Jets left winger "Evander Kane" will be thier for the next 6 seasons due to the signing of a 315 million dollar contract.

-On Sept.9/2012 the Virden True Value burnt down. The seniors four-plex behind was damaged all seniors got out.

Confucius
Confucius was a a Chinese philospher, thinker, and scholar.
Lived about 551 BCE- 479 BCE, Not successful
Was not a religon more on a philosophy of life.
He wanted everyone to respect eachother.
He supported a powerful leader, but wanted to limit the power.
After Confucius died, his ideas were popular.
His descendents were honoured.

Paper and Printing
An important invention of the chinese.
They used old rags, hemp, tree bark could be able to make cheaper paper.
Starch was added to make the paper stronger, and  gelatin, made from lichens, formed a coating for the paper.
For printing the used pear or jujube wood, cut the wood the size of two book pages.
Covered them in paste, then the information to be printed was written on a thin sheet of paper the same size.

Porcelain
Chinese porcelain is white, delicate, and translucent, valued in medieval europe.
Porcelain is now made into expensive dishes called china.

Gunpowder and Fireworks
Was invented about the same time as woodblock printing.
They used gunpowder for entertainment.
At first, used to make firework displays.

Footbinding
Footbinding for women is one Chinese custom that other countries did not imitate.
The binding caused the feet to become crescent-shaped or lotus-shape. Tiny, bound feet were considered a sign of female beauty and reminded women that they were not free.
Once binded the feet can never go back to the normal shape.

China notes:
Food:
-basic food was millet, barley, wheat, beans, vegetables, fish, and hunted animals such as bears.
-ate 24 different kinds fish
-onions, garlic, dogs, pigs, goats, sheep, water buffalo, chickens.
-in times of famine even ate insects.
-ate food with chopsticks
-tea was a commonly consumed drink, became a valuable trading product.


What they wore:
-plants, animals, and silkworms supplied the flexible fibers needed to make soft wearable fabric.
-silk production became an important art and industry.
-men wore long, belted tunics with a jacket over top. This style was the same for men in different classes. The type of fabric and amount of decoration indicated the social rank of the wearer.
-Women wore plain jackets and belted skirts over simple tunic dresses.
-silk was expensive to produce and a long time to make and was considered precious, it was reserved for nobility.
-Peasant's clothing was similar in style but was made with rough fibers from plants, like hemp or banana leaf.
-wool was used as padding in outerwear and was woven into thick fabrics.
-Men wore simple hats or kerchiefs on their heads until elaborate hairstyles became popular.
-Men often wore hair in a heavy roll, with a short pig tail hanging down the back.
-Woman held their hair in place with pins made from jade, bone, and ivory.
-Women also wore necklaces and pendants made from jade and bone, often shaped like birds, tigers or elephants.

Housing:
-Capital of the Shang Dynasty was Anyang.
-Anyang covered a large area along a bend of the Hung Ho River.
-River offered some protection from invasions.
-Packed earth was used for foundations of the buildings.
-On top of the foundation were wooden pillars, used to support the walls.
-Walls were made of twigs, plastered with clay. Roofs probably thatched.
-Most buildings were built around a central courtyard.
-Most merchants and crafts people lived on the outside of the capital city, in mud huts.
-In winter, farmers lived in small villages near the city.
-Farmers homes were simple one-room huts with dirt floors, mud walls, and thatched roofs.
-In summer the farmers moved to their fields, where they lived in bamboo huts.

 Technology:
-Used the potters wheel to make high-quality pottery.
-Artisans made elaborate chariot decorations and a variety of bronze weapons, spears, knives, and axes.
-Other crafts people were equally skilled at working with jade, wood, and bone and made usefull tools for farmers and builders.
-They had cart wheels, wheelbarrows, paddle wheel boats, and sledges for transporting heavy building materials.
-Farmers had digging forks, flails, hoes, ploughs, sickles, and querns. 
-Metal workers also used anvils.
-The windlass was used for lifting heavy objects.

Religious and Spiritual beliefs:
-Most people believed in the spirit world.
-Most important god was Tien, the god of heaven.
-People practiced ancestor worship
-They believed in Filial piety, younger family members were respectful of elders and the community.
-Common people did not share the religion of the nobility.
-They worshiped various gods, whom they believed controlled the earth and crops.
-People consulted sorcerers. (aka Wu)
-Wu could work magic on nature, and provided spells to protect someone from evil spirits  and could also help provide friendly spirits.


The Burial of a King:
- When a ruler died, a great pit was dug and ramps led down into the pit.
-He was accompanied by weapons, ornaments, bronze ceremonial vessels, horses, chariots and dogs.
-servants were also sacrificed and buried with their leader so they could continue to serve him in the afterlife.


The Military:
-Nobles were the warriors and lead the armies.
-Armed with bronze axes and daggers, they rode into battle in chariots with spoked wheels.
-Foot soldiers fought at close range using spears and knives.
-China had a history of women warriors.
-Lady Hao, was the third wife of the last Shang ruler, waged several military campains.


The fall of the Shang Dynasty:
-The Shang Dynasty ruled for more than five centuries.
-The last ruler had a beautiful partner, named Ta Chi.
-Ta Chi was known for the torture she inflicted on anyone who did not show her proper respect.
-Under the cruel reign of the king and Ta Chi, people revolted.
-A group from the west called the Zhou led the up rise against the Shang.
-The last Shang king set fire to his palace and then committed suicide.

The First Emperor of China:
-of the 300 emperors of china, Qin Shi Huang Di had the greatest and long lasting effect on China.
-His Dynasty ruled from 221 BCE to 206 BCE.
-He became king when he was 13 years old.
-By age 38, he had united a number of states in the area and declared himself the first emperor of a united china.
-He set standards for writing,weights and measures,money and the law, and all parts of the country adopted them.
-These changes improved communication and business within the country. 
-People traded with countries with countries such as Persia and India.
-Qin Shi Huang Di did not believe in the teachings of Confucius, he burned many books and he burned more that 400 people who believed in Confucianism.
-If a man disagreed with the emperor he was killed and so was his family.
-Qin Shi Huang had huge projects built during his reign, including the grand canal, the great wall and the Terra Cotta warriors of Xi'an.

The Grand Canal: 
-The grand canal is the worlds longest and oldest human made canal system.
-It is 1795 kilometers long and has 24 locks and 60 bridges.
-Construction started in the 5th century CE and finished in 610 CE during the Sui Dynasty.
-The canal runs from Hangzhou, southwest of Shanghai, north to Tianjin and then to Beijing.
 -The canal is still used to transport goods to and from markets.

The king was the head of all society, who was also the religious leader.
The nobles were the warrior leaders, below the king.
Below the nobles were craftspeople and merchants.
Farmers made the lower class.
Slaves were below the farmers.

Craftspeople were skilled at making weapons, tools, jewellery, and pottery. Weavers made fine silk cloth that nobles made into lavish garments. Cowrie shells to pay. Metal coins invented in 5th century.

Farmers were the largest number of people. Grew food, respected, often badly treated. Rented their land. Were soliders in times of war, construction at times of peace.

Laborers- probably slaves. Used as sacrifices. Worked on kings buildings.

-Three engineers were riding in the locomotive of Via Rail train No. 92 when it derailed near Burlington, Ontario, on Sunday Afternoon.
-The Virden Golden Bears Girls Basketball team Participated in the Java Jam basketball tournament. They won the JV title.

On Kings day, Jan. 9, they bake bread in a wreath shape with candied fruit on top and a ceramic baby Jesus on it. Whoever gets the baby Jesus in their bread will host a party on Feb. 2 for family and have the ceramic baby blessed at church.
