Cartherine de' Medici- She was Queen of Consorts and Queen of England.
-is known for having bad decisions and being linked the the St. Bartholomew's day massacer

John Davis- he was an English explorer. his inventions were made to help him navigate, and was killed by Japanese pirates.

Donatello- He was a famous early Renaissance Italian artist and sculptor from Florence

Francesco Petrarca- He was the "Father of Humanism"and he has been called the first tourist.

Vittoria Colonna- She was born in one of the major noble families in Rome. She was a poet and a humanist.

Isablla d'Este- She was a musician, poet, and was in politics.

Rabelais- He was a priest, book writer, and he wrote about astrology

History Happening Today
-
The OLCS Grade 8 class went to Mr. Ted Taylor's Christmas Tree farm. We chose the "perfect" Charlie Brown Christmas tree.We thank Mr Taylor for his annual donation and for coming out on a -25 degrees with a wind chill of -35 degrees. Mr. Taylor's tree lot provides a home for many birds, coyotes and deer!
- There has been a decrease in the number of people receiving the H1N1 vaccination. Only about 37% of Manitoban's have received the vaccination. There appears to be enough for all people wishing to receive it. Incidents of human H1N1 have been reported in Boissevain and in turkeys in Ontario.
- Prime Minister Harper is visiting South Korea and has spoken to the government. He has as well opened trade of Canadian beef in China.

We presented our Renaissance people biography's
Ferdinand Magellan- In October of 1520 he found the Strait of Magellan. Ferdinand also explored the Pacific Ocean.

Friday, December 4, 2009- Leslie

Today we continued on with our presentations.

Mary, queen of Scots- Before Mary was even a year old, she was crowned queen of Scots. Mary was executed because Elizabeth I, Mary's cousin, believed she was plotting against her.

Henry Hudson- Henry Hudson's crew went against him and he was sent adrift in the Hudson Bay, where he was thought to have died along with 6 crewmen and his teenage son. He took 3 main voyages at an attempt to find the Northeast Passage. Henry discovered the Hudson Bay, and the Hudson Strait.

Martin Frobisher- He was a pirate and a pirateer, which means he was hired by the king to attack ships from other countries. On his second and third voyages, he was paid to find gold in the New World, but he actually found iron pyrite (fools gold).

Properzia de Rossi- Properzia was a very successful female Italian Renaissance sculptor. Her sculptures were usually religious and were very small, one of the most famous being a crucification in a peach pit.

Pico della Mirandola- Pico was a writer and a philosopher. His most famous writing was "Oration on the Dignity of Man".

Dante Alighieri- Dante is known as "the Supreme Poet" in Italy. Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio are also known as "the three fountains or "the three crowns".

Henry the Navigator- He established a school to train navigators and map makers. He sent explorers around the west coast of Africa and then mapped the region. He never did sail, he just sent people out.

Don't forget to study. Remember that our test is on December 9!!

December 3rd, 2009-By: Samantha-Amazing People Project Presentation

Bartholomew Diaz- They renamed Cape of Storm to Cape of Good Hope, because they thought that if it was called Cape of Storm no one would want to go there.

Martin Luther- Published the 95 Theses that criticized the Catholic Church.

Alessandra Strozzi- Alessandra wrote letters to her sons. They were about domestic life in 15th century Italy and were later published.

Lucrezia Borgia-Was a cast as a femme fatale. Portrait of a Youth is the only identified portrait of Lucrezia still surviving today.

Girolama Savonarole-Is known for his burning of books and vanities (mirrors etc).

Sir Thomas More-He wrote the book called Utopia and he became speaker of the House of Commons. William Shakespeare wrote a play about him in 1592 called Sir Thomas More.

Christopher Columbus-Columbus was the first explorer to sail across the Atlantic Ocean and find the American Continent in 1492. The Saying is "Christopher Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue in 1492".

Jacques Cartier- Named Canada, founded Montreal and mapped St. Lawrence river.

Dec 2/09

In social today we presented our Renaissance people biography's. Did you know that,

Niccolo Machiavelli- Wrote the book called "The Prince" in 1513, which was as some people say, a guide for rulers on how to use sly and dishonest means to stay in power. His book was also a landmark work in the history of political power.

William Shakespeare- He wrote Romeo and Juliet in 1597. Shakespeare's play "Macbeth" is thought to be one of the most produced plays ever, with performance beginning somewhere in the world every 4 hours!

Isabella of Aragon- was involved in the 8th crusade against Tunis.

Pieter Brueghel-He specialized in landscapes populated by peasants. He is often credited as being the first western painter to paint landscapes for their own sake, rather than as a backdrop of history painters.

Johann Gutenberg- He invented the printer press in the 1450's. HE wrote his own bible and 200 copies were scheduled to be printed, today only 22 copies are known to exist and are worth millions of dollars.

-Today we have snow in Oak Lake. (15 cm)
- Bob Thirst returns from 6 months in space today. He has been on the Space station. Longest time in space for a Canadian. Plus it's the first time 2 Canadians have passed each other in space.
- On Friday 90 soldiers returned from Afghanistan.
- Obama has promised an additional 30 000 American troops for Afghanistan.
- 2 uninvited guests attend president Obama's Thanksgiving feast. They bridged security and were welcomed, introduced, had supper and photos.
- Boys and girls clubs in Winnipeg are honored for their volunteer work with youth. 600 volunteers!
- "You are the Michaelangelo of you. You sculpture your own David"
