1. The traders of Mesopotamia traveled on boats called guffa.
2. The city states of Mesopotamia were very dependent on their scribes.
3. Scribes recorded many things such as; what crops were grown, how many animals were born and how many died, and what each citizen paid in taxes.

  • The weight loss drug meridia has been pulled off the market in both Canada and US because of worries about drug side effects such as heart attacks and stokes.
  • On Monday Montreal Allouettes beat Calgary Stampeders 46-19!
  • Winnipeg Blue Bombers beat BC Lions 47-35 (Overtime)
  • People are so anxious to become thin they are at times willing to ingest tapeworm larval in order to lose wieght.

  • Farmers are having trouble getting to their fields due to excessive rain.
  • Shoal Lake Yellowhead chiefs AAA hockey team had their first home game on Friday and unfortunately lost to the Winnipeg Wild 6-0
  • A few weeks ago a girl walked out of a sunglasses store. She had on sunglasses and someone threw acid in her face. If she wasn't wearing sunglasses, she would have gone blind.
  • The 500 bike ride for MS was this past weekend.
  • The walk for autism was this past weekend in Brandon.
  • The Bison Transport trailer with back end blown out right beside the Oak Lake turn off.
  • Their was a big recall on Fisher Price products. There were over 11 million toys bring recalled.
  • Saskatchewan Roughriders QB Darion Dwarnt has been selected the CFL's offencive player of the month for September. Roughriders slot back Andy Fantuz picked up the top Canadian honors.

  • 33 miners in chile have been trapped underground in a mine for nearly 2 month. They are drilling 12'' holes. They might not get them out until December. They now have electricity, food, fresh water, fresh air and being pampered with a 1'' T.V.
  • A sapling tree as planted in Montreal in memory of Anne Frank who was in hiding from Nazi's in WWII and eventually captured. The sapling was from a chestnut from the original tree growing outside of Anne's window.

  • Hurricane Igor floods many parts of Newfoundland last week, causing expensive damage
  • Saskatchewan Rough Riders santched another victory against the Hamilton Ti-cats with a final score of 32-25.
  • Researchers have discovered the discoveries of the fossil of a scary looking bird which had a nearly 6 meter wing span, making it possibly the biggest bird ever to fly.
  • OLCS raised $182 for cancer research during our annual Terry Fox Run.
  • Tragic bus accident kills 12 in Berlin, Germany.
  • Bailey and BJ traveled to CCA rodeo over the weekend. Bailey placed first in the average for junior steer riding and second in short Go! Well done Bailey!
  • A Sydney man was caught driving more than 220km/h. He was put in custody and lost his license.
  • Justin Bieber made an apperance on C.S.I on Thursday. He is Reappearing back on the show in February.
  • Bombers lost against Montreal and Friday evening. Final score was 40-44
  • BJ and Bailey attended Beachy Rodeo in Saskatcewan on the weekend. They were entered in the wild pony races
  • Meandher creek pumkin patch sets a new record for attendance, 1200 people! Birthday Parties, school visits, the Brandon Sun and a radio station.Even visitors from Ottawa.
  • On Sunday, the N.Y. Yankees beat the Boston Red Socks (4-3) in extra innings.

-A helicopter carrying American soldiers was shot down yesterday in Afghanistan, killing 10. 2010 is the most deadliest year of the 9 year war in Afghanistan. The Taliban are claiming responsibility for the shooting down of the helicopter.

-The farm effects competition is now up to $1100.(BJ's dad predicts it is a wood rasp sound) 101.1 The Farm.

-The blades for a wind turbine are being shipped by train to Moosomin, SK to build a wind farm. The train is parked in Oak Lake, MB.

-Stacy has tickets for Ozzy Osborne who is coming to the MTS center in Wpg, on Saturday November 20/2010 with Judas Priest, Frontman, Rob Halford opening for him.


-Sunday. they raised $500 million for cancer Research through Terry Fox Runs.

-The Pope recently visited England and was welcomed by the Queen. This is the first visit n at least 500 years by a Roman Catholic Pope to the British Monarchy.

-Gun registry will be voted on in Parliament today.
-On Friday the Sask. Roughriders beat the Calgary Stampeders 43-37.
-There was a bad snow storm in New Zealand. The snow storm wrecked 1000's of peoples homes. It has been the worst snow fall they ever had!
-The NHL starts Wed. Sept 22, first game is Toronto against Ottawa!
-Hurricane Igor is lashing Bermuda with heavy rain and high winds forcing window boarding, sand bagging and stocking up on emergency supplies. The eye of the hurricane is bigger than Bermuda.
-Justin Bieber concert in Wpg. At the MTS center last week. Kaitlynn attended the concert and really liked it.
-BP oil well dead. An oil well that exploded on April 20th and killed 11 workers has been permanently plugged with cement. The BP well spewed more than 206 million gallons of oil over a 5 month period. It is the worst US oil spill in history.

  • Winnipeg Blue Bombers destroyed Saskatchewan Roughriders in a CFL game played in Winnipeg on Sunday, September 12/10. The final score was 31-2!!
  • British Columbia has enforced the toughest penalties for drinking and driving a vehicle.
  • They are beginning the prose of taking the Berlin wall down. The Berlin wall separates east and west Germany
  • The NHL will begin it's expedition games on September 21/10.
  • New scientific evidence that shows that people with ADD/ADHD can be cured by a treatment. Involving putting a device on their heads and scrambling messages to the brain
  • Saturday was the 9th anniversary of 9/11-the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, along with the pentagon as well as a plain crash in Shanks Ville Penn. terrorist attacks were carried out by Islamic militants- nearly 3000 killed in 2001.
  • On Saturday, September 11/10, Bailey traveled to Beausejour for the BB Rodeo and tied for first in the junior steer riding event with a score of 71! (MRCA and CCA) He and Cody had fun in the mud apres winning.
  • A lottery winner in Japan donates some of his prize winnings to MS research because his mom suffers from the disease.
  • A gas leak in the USA results in an explosion.
  • Kenny and Tamara were married. They are expecting another baby boy early December.
  • On Wednesday OLCS will celebrate their back to school BBQ
  • This week the AMA Motor cross championships were held in Southern California-Ryan Dunge won the 450 cruse and Ray Cunard won the 250 cruse.

Today we finished reading the Australia booklets. We also did History Happening Today.

  • Chicago Blackhawks beat Philadelphia Flyers 7-4 in the 5th game of the Stanley Cup finals.
  • Lakers lost to Boston 103-94 in the NBA finals. The series is tied1-1.
  • Parents are being advised to have a secret password for children due to an attempted abduction near Dauphin.
  • A 13 year old boy from the U.S.A. climbed Mount Everest last month. It took him 51 days. He has climbed 5 out of the 7 continents tallest mountains.
  • A severe tornado hit a small Ontario town last night (June 6).
  • Another Canadian soldier was killed in Afghanistan over the weekend.
  • McDonald's recalls over 1 million Shrek glasses due to toxic paint found on the cups.
  • OLCS grade 7 student received 2 firsts(bull riding), a second and a third in shutedogging. Way to go!
  • 4-H rally day was held in Oak Lake on Saturday, June 5. Oak Lake 4-H beef club won for the best marching.

-Philadelphia Flyers won game 7 against the Boston Bruins to advance to the next round of the playoffs.
-Montreal Canadians had a horrible start in their series against the Philadelphia Flyers. With a loss of 6 - 0 to the Flyers.
- Wheat Kings loose 9 - 3 Windsor Spitfires. 5 minutes into the game the score was 5 - 0 for the Spitfires!
Yesterdays game the Wheat Kings played the Moncton Wildcats winning 4-0.
-In Vietnam on Friday anti government protesters started riots, burning cars and threatening to attack government buildings.
-On May 14th 104 people died in a plane crash in Libya, one boy survived the wreckage (he and his family were from Holand) he was ten years old.
- A man went missing in Calgary, and ended up at the Regina hospital, had been tortured and lost extensive weight.
-Mantha was going for a lay up in a Brandon basketball tournament. Her foot was stepped on and Mantha kept going, and scored the basket. Her leg gave way- she ended up with a half cast and a possible cracked growth plate. To be determined next Tuesday!
-19 year old female, 20 year old male arrested in a large drug bust.
-On Wednesday, May 13 it was Manitoba's 140th Birthday! There are alot of Manitoba home coming celebrations planned.

-British Petroleum's containment dome failed to work over the weekend on the Gulf oil spill. They are going to build a new containment dome, but that is two months away.

-New York ferry runs ashore and hits docks; many people are injured, but not seriously.

-Calgary Hitman win WHL.

-Memorial cup begins Friday, May 14 in Brandon.

- Bailey has a new baby brother. His name is Spencer John and was born at 11:17 pm on May 9th. He weighed 8 lbs 11 ounces, and was 21. 25 inches long. Congratulations to Bailey and his family!

History Happening Today

-San Jose won their first game against Detroit in the second round and the score was 4-3.

-Montreal's goalie is unstoppable; out of 134 shots on net in 3 games he was able to save 131. Amazing! (Hockey's biggest upsets, Montreal beating Washington)

-6000 U.S. troops are being deployed to Louisiana to help contain the oil spill. The spill is now the size of Jamaica and heading straight for Louisiana coastline.

- Canadians are now living 3 years longer than Americans. Statistics say due to Canadian health care, and lower poverty rates.

- Brandon was listed as number 7 out of 180 cities as one of Canada's best cities to live in. Winnipeg was number 9 and Ottawa was number 1.

- Obama banned any new drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

-OLCS grades k-8 are performing their dances today. Have fun!

History Happening Today
  • OLCS is celebrating the kick off to spring break. This week has been jam packed with spirit activities. Today is Opposite Day, Hat and Gum Day. We are having Cowadian Idol in the gym this afternoon.
  • We are looking forward to skyping with Hamiota today. We wish Hamiota well with their Greek celebrations.
  • "Velocaraptor" returned from a 4 day TYPS conference in Ottawa! Mr. H and Velocaraptor saw Saskatchewan, Calgary, Quebec, and Ottawa teams play basketball in the CISA Nationals, Parliament Hill, went up in the Peace Tower, and ate amazing food! The flight was about 2 1/2 hours long, Velocaraptor had his AXE body mist removed by security :)!
  • "Showtime"'s hockey team (Hamiota Huskies) won bronze in provincials in Portage on the weekend!
  • Another Canadian soldier died in Afghanistan.
  • Jennifer Jones and her team are 7 and 0 at the Ladies Ford World Curling Championships in Swift Current!

Today was a working class. We worked on correcting our binders, reading pages 328-333, and working on our title pages. Reading is due for tomorrow and all corrections of binder must be done by Thursday.

This week is Spirit Week. Yesterday was pajama Day and today is Twin Day. KJ is my twin! We have the three-legged race, Milk chug-a-lug and milk mustache competitions at lunch time.

March 10, 2010-Leslie

Today we began the unit on the Industrial Revolution. We were asked to list all the machines we used today, and in the past. We realized that very little is done in a day without machines. We listed a calculator, coffee maker, alarm clock, TV, and a toaster, just to name a few. We discussed how technology still will change our lives in the future.

History Happening Today
Sunday was not super Sunday for Canada in the Winter Olympics.
- The mens hockey team lost to USA 3-5. The main factor was goal tending. Ryan Miller in goal for USA was basically unbeatable.
-The womens curling team lost to China.
-Mellisa Hollingsworth fell from 2nd place to 5th in her final skeleton race. She was winning until she bumped the walls. Mellisa still waved the OLCS Canadian flag at the end of her race.
- Christina Groves got silver in the 1500m speed skating for Canada. Jon Montgomery from Russell wins gold in mens skeleton.
Canada has 9 medals.

- OLCS will hold its annual Social/Science fair Thurs. Feb. 27. Projects are due now!


We corrected our Enlightenment booklet.

Today we did History Happening Today.
1. John Masson received his CA (Chartered Accountant) in Winnipeg on the weekend.
2. On Feb. 1 in Mexico, road side bombing, new school for girls, some girls are missing.
3. The Super Bowl was played on Sunday, Feb. 7/10-New Orleans Saints vs. Indianapolis Colts. Saints won their first ever Super Bowl. They have endured a hurricane, and flooding. They have been rebuilding their city and their football team.
4. Jennifer Jones skipped Team Canada and won the Scottie Tournament of Hearts vs. PEI.
5. OLCS boys and girl played basketball in Brandon on the weekend. Boys continue to dominate. The girls are also dominating and have been challenged for rematches.
6. OLCS grade 7/8 visited St. Lazare school and spent the day immersed in francais.

The Grade 6/7/8 boys had won the Oak Lake basketball tournament yesterday against Reston and Virden, We are yet Undefeated. and we are completely awesome and we are going to win Divisionals!!! Go Raptors!

February 2nd, 2010 -Samantha

HHT-February 2nd, 2010-Groundhog Day

-In Nova Scotia and one centre in USA their groundhog saw his shadow, meaning they will have six more weeks of winter. In Manitoba, Manitoba Merv, a puppet groundhog from Oak Hammock Marsh, did not see his shadow meaning we will not have six more weeks of winter, and we will get an early spring!

-In Vancouver, as they prepare for the Olympics- they are suffering from unusually warm temperature- Pineapple Express, They are helicoptering in snow from Mountain Tops and Building. Events with a straw/hay base. This is costing a lot of extra $$.

-Melissa Hollingsworth (Cady and Bailey's cousin) will receive Calgary's award for top Athlete of the Year today. She will not be able to attend because she is already in Vancouver preparing for the Olympics!

Today we received our test back. The Low was 55% and the High was 98%! WE made history, everyone passed!

1)the were an unusual amount of talented people that now have the ability to communicate.
2)There was finances to support scientists
3)there were new technologies such as the microscope and the telescope
4)exploration

Today in Social Studies we worked on our Age of Revolution hand out. Page 387 is due on Monday, you also have to read pages 294-297 in your textbook. Pages 389 and 390 in our workbook will be done in class on Monday.

Grades 5-8 went curling today and Brandon's team beat Samantha's team. :)

2. Reason the Reformation happened:
-The movement in the 16th century that demanded change or reform in the Roman Catholic Church.
-There was a belief that the Roman Catholic church was not teaching or following the true teachings of the bible. These were the reformers who?
Reasons for:
1. Religious
-Conflicts between the pope and the church officials as to who should rule.
-Money was going to build lavish palaces ect. for officials "rules" seamed different for upper class.
2. Political
-involvement with kings, wars, kings wanting more power, pope not wanting to give up power.
3.Economic
-Changes: People are moving to cities, towns, church is not as important as many have become wealthy merchants, tradespeople.
4. Cultural
-More people could read, there for they had new ideas and info from other civilizations reached Europe and made people see their religion or church in a different light.
5.Martin Luther
-His 95 theses questioned many practices especially the practices of indulgences. People were open to new insights Luther believed that you could speak to God directly and ask for forgiveness rather than go to the priest that chose punishments ect..

HISTORY HAPPENING TODAY!
- Brandon carried the Olympic torch in Virden Saturday. He purchased his torch for $350 and the suit was provided. It was pretty heavy and you could feel the warmth from the flame. There was a torch bearer from Dauphin who also ran with the torch in 1988.

-Earthquake in California.

- Canadian stamps went up in price from 54 cents to 57 cents.

-2 people jumped from the Dubai tallest building in the world. They waited 10 seconds before pulling their parachutes. They still had a 30-40 second ride.

-1st Canadian amputee soldier has returned to duty in Afghanistan. He wants to prove terrorism will not win out.

- Canadian PM Stephen Harper has closed parliament. He says due to the Canadian economy and the opposition parties say due to controversy due to Afghanistan detainees(prisoners).

-The weather is doing very strange things in Europe, England, United States-Florida where it is normally warmer temperatures in winter there has been cold, snow. In Manitoba last week we had a low of -47 today the temperature is -2. Robins have been spotted in the Oak Lake area- is this a sign of a warmer winter?

We continued to read about the reformation and we checked out movies on teacher tube!

History Happening Today

Today we read the Brandon Sun, the olympic torch has been to Gimli i the primer carrying the torch as well as the students. The torch leaves Winnipeg today. One of the torch barriers will be Eddie ( the Eagle1) Edwards from England. He was the first english ski jumper in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary. There are about 1000 communities left before the torch arrives in Vancouver, February 12/10.

-4 Canadian soldiers and a journalist from Calgary were killed by a road side bomb.

-Dec.30/09 Jesse Kreutzer was born.

- A boy getting wood was attacked by a cougar. He was saved by his Golden Lab Retriever. The Retriever needed stitching to his right side. Police killed the cougar.

- Killarney is having problems with over population of deer coming into the town. Coyote population is increasing as well as coming into the town. Trapping to deal with.

- Some scientists predict the end of the world in 2012- planets lining up with Milky Way is their theory.

-Olympic Torch is approaching! Toronto last night Steinbach, MB today, The Forks in Wpg tonight at 7 :00 pm. In Virden on Sat am. OLCS students will have their Olympic hockey Jerseys this week. Pep Rally on Friday. Everyone who can make it bring a Canadian flag and cheers Brandon on Sat a.m.

- Christmas Eve the Pope was attacked by a lady.

-Tonight Canada plays USA for gold medal.

-McNally Robinson are closing their book store due to loss of money. Internet is hurting book stores.

-Dubai Tower- Gulf Emerat(economy bad turn) tallest structure in the world-luxury hotel hotel/apartments 160 stories high-cost them 9 million for floor- 828 m. high-1 km high- architectural + engineering marvel!

-attempted terrorinst attack on an airplane.

-Canadian dollar is rising- 96 cents.
