Festival du Voyageur

• In the 1800s, the two main countries (Hudson's Bay and Northwest) were fighting.
• The Assiniboine River was the only thing separating them.
• In the summer, the people of each company (who are called voyageurs) built, hunted, and traded with others. When winter came around, the people would try to survive.
• There were Indigenous and European peoples.
• The Europeans were good at making glass and decorating items. The Indigenous were good at hunting. 
• If a European person and an Indigenous person had a child, that child would be Metis. 

Newfoundland Snowstorm

• On January 17, a blizzard covered St. John's, Newfoundland, with over 76 centimetres of snow.
• The wind speed was over 150km an hour.
• Everyone there was under S.O.E for 8 days. 
• The snowstorm had trapped some people in their homes.
• Mayor John Norman estimated the cost being over $1 million to fix the sea wall.

Canadian National Railway

• The Ontario police said that several people had been arrested and that the use of force was a last resort for moving blockade
• The protest has affected rail travel for at least 103 000 Canadians and prompted temporary layoffs.
• The government-owned Via Rail Canada which mostly runs on Canadian National tracks.

Nine-Year-Old Shows Off Dyslexic Superpower with Rubiks Cube

• Benjamin has dyslexia and struggles with reading and writing.
• Benjamin's story is no sad tale of disability, however, as he shows what he can do.
• He finished 750 cubes and created a mosaic in about 5 hours.
• "Dyslexia is not my disability...Dyslexia is my superpower!"

Louis Riel as Manitoba's First Premier

• Louis Riel was a Canadian politician who helped found the province of Manitoba.
• Riel was born of Metis descent in 1844 in the Red River Settlement, in what today is southern Manitoba.
• In Manitoba, Riel is generally celebrated for his role in creating the province.
• The NDP Party in Manitoba is proposing Riel be given the title of the honorary first premier Louis Riel Day is a statutory holiday that always falls on the third Monday in February. The first Louis Riel was celebrated in 2008, and always coincides with the annual celebration of  Festival Du Voyageur in Winnipeg.

Janelle Vachon Scotties

• Janelle Vachon, from Oak Lake, competed in the 2020 Scotties.
• It was from January 29th-February 2nd at the Riverdale Community Centre in Rivers.
• Her teammates are Dorri-Anne Vince, Megan Huculak, and Hayley Surovy.
• They won one game against Ursel 8-7 and lost the other 4 games.

• Sofia Spencer is a girl from Toronto, Canada.
• She is very interested in bugs but was continually bullied because of it.
• She is now a published book author and has one finished book, called THE BUG GIRL, telling about her story and how she was able to overcome the bullying.

Locusts in Somalia

Large swarms of locusts spread across east Africa into Somalia. One of the biggest invasions since 1950. The outbreak has destroyed about 100 00 hectares of farmland. It is the wet year and warm temperate that has caused the outbreak. Officials are worried about Somalia’s food insecurity. The Government has a plan to use chemicals.

Groundhogs Disagree

• Three groundhogs named Shubenacadie Sam, Wiarton Willie, and Fred La Marmotte made big presentations on groundhog day.
• On groundhog day their predictions were all different. 
• In Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario three groundhogs emerged out of their holes.Two of them saw their shadow and one did not.
•  People were confused about whether it was an early spring, or six more weeks of winter.
• These groundhogs have been wrong before..... so why are we all so surprised at this?

Scientists Discover a New Type of Northern Lights

• Northern Lights are the colourful lights that you sometimes see in the sky at night. The Northern Lights are also known as the Aurora Borealis.
• These new Northern Lights are called "dunes."
• They come in many colours, but mainly white and purple
• The dunes are believed to be caused by waves of oxygen atoms that are glowing due to a stream of particles released from the sun

Super Bowl 54

• The Kansas City Chiefs played the San Fransisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54.
• The Super Bowl was played in Miami Gardens, Flordia.
• Kansas City won the American Football Conference (AFC) and San Fransisco won the National Football Conference (NFC) with both teams advancing to the Super Bowl.
• The Super Bowl was played on February 2nd, 2020.
• The final score was 31-20 with Kansas City winning their first Super Bowl since the American Football League and National Football League Championship game existed.

Easter Island Statues

- On February 6, 2020 archeologists from Binghamton University found evidence that the Easter Island heads (or Moai Heads) were made about 300 years later than was originally believed.

- The team was lead by Robert J. DiNapoloe.

- They found evidence that supports the theory that the Spanish fabricated the story that the natives were almost all gone. They made this up because they suffered a great defeat, and they didn't want to go home as fools.

- The heads are believed to be signs to their gods.

-The heads are on a South American Pacific Island called  Rapa Nui.


Saskatchewan CP Train Derailment

-On Feb.6th, a train was reported derailed in SK. This is the second derailment in the last 2months. 

-That morning the train spilled over 1.2 million litres of oil.

-People are now changing the speed of the trains to 35 miles per hour while carrying dangerous goods or with more than 20 cars.

- Bong Joon Ho won 6 awards for his movie "Parasite"
-Ho was the winner in the following categories: Best Picture, Best Foreign-Language Movie, Best Screenplay and more. 
- Hair Love won for the Best Animated short film
- Billie Eilish performed The Beatles' "Yesterday" with her brother Finneas O'Connell

Update on The Coronavirus-Covid 19

• Covid-19 is a very rapid spreading disease
• Covid-19 originated in China and is spreading worldwide
• 45 000 cases have been reported, 1 115 deaths, and 8 cases reported in Canada
• Covid-19 may or may not have come from contaminated fish, or bats
• Scientists have recently found a virus in bats that is very similar to the coronavirus

      75th Anniversary of Auschwitz

• Auschwitz was the largest Nazi concentration camp, known as the "Final Solution"
• Between 1.1 and 1.5 million people died; 90% were Jewish
• June 14, 1940, the first prisoners arrived
• January 27, 1945....7650 sick and starving prisoners were rescued by Soviet troops
• January 18, 1945, approximately 60,000 prisoners were made to walk in what they now call "death marches". The old and the weak were shot if they fell behind.
• January 27, 2020, is the 75th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
• Over 200 survivors will be in attendance
• Many survivors educate others to keep the memory of what happened alive so that this kind of history will never be forgotten.                                                     

    2019-novel Coronavirus 

•  The Coronavirus is the same virus as colds, SARS, and MERS. 
• It is transmitted from animals to humans. 
• The Coronavirus outbreak started in Wuhan, the capital oh Hubei, in China at a seafood market.
• The first signs of Coronavirus were on December 31st and the new virus was announced on January 7th.  
• Symptoms are fevers and coughing, and basic cold type symptoms.  

    The life and legacy of Kobe Bryant

• Kobe played for the L.A. Lakers for almost his whole career.
• He chose to be nicknamed the Black Mamba.
• He was always generous and ready to help when people were in need of aid in their life
• he had been living the life up until his sad and immediate demise.
• he retired early in 2016 being only in his 40s.
• he created a gym named the Black Mamba where he helped people who were coming into the NBA train.

New Stamp

• January 23, 2020, was the unveiling of the new stamp from Canada Post.
• The unveiling was done in Cherry Brook, Nova Scotia.
• On the stamp was the winning team for the Coloured Hockey Championship in 1904.
• Back then, hockey had white teams and coloured teams and the coloured players were rarely acknowledged by professionals 

Bell Let's Talk

• On January 29th, 2020 another Annual Bell Let's Talk Day was held.
• Bell Let's Talk Day was created by Clara Hughes in January 2011 to raise awareness about mental health.
•  You can support this all Canadian fundraiser by sharing, retweeting, using the branded hashtag, or via texting. Each share donates 5 cents towards mental health organizations.
• It started with the initiative of donating 50 million dollars and so far has raised 25 million.

Canada Wins Gold

• On Sunday, January 5, 2020, the Canadian Junior Hockey team played Russia in Ostrava, Czech Republic for the gold medal, and won!
• Akil Thomas scored the winning goal for Canada.
• Canada won against Russia 4-3.

Iran and US War

• Trump targeted Iran's supreme leader. 
• The US assassinated Qusem Soleimani.
• The US stopped Iran from selling oil internationally. 
• The US doesn't want war and wants things to de-escalate. 

Australian Fires 

• Millions of animals and over 28 citizens lost in the fire. Along with 3 American waterbombers who were lost in a plane crash, trying to fight the fires.  
• Over 300 homes and 17.9 million acres of land burned. 
• The fires started in late July, during the annual fires season. 
• New South Wales and Victoria are the hardest hit states. With thousands of citizens evacuate 
• Dry, hot, windy climate, lightning strikes, and climate change are mainly to blame for the severity of the fires. Along with 24 people charged for deliberately starting fires.

• Vaping is not a healthy alternative to smoking.
• Vaping will expose you to dangerous chemicals that can cause fatal diseases including cancer.
• One of the biggest concerns is popcorn lung which is like pneumonia except there is no cure.

• Hong Kong is a country in China.
• Great Britan took Hong Kong in the 1800s. The Chinese lost wars to the British for 99 years ending in 1997.
• After 1997, Britan handed Hong Kong to China and now Hong Kong is no longer a democracy.

• Greta is a 16-year-old Swedish girl who inspired hundreds of thousands to protest the government's inaction regarding the climate change crisis.
• She has attended the 2019 UN climate change and is passionate about spreading the word about global warming around the world.

• The fires were started by local farmers using the slash and burn process.
• One and a half soccer fields of forest are being destroyed every minute.

• We as a class strongly disagree with these statements.

• Gord LeClerc worked for CTV News Winnipeg for 25 years before being laid off on Nov. 13.
• It is implied that the station is modernizing its news broadcast format 
• CTV provides broadcasting service to 95% of Manitoba

Alberta and Saskatchewan separating from Canada

•  Is it true that AB and SK  really want to separate?
• Talk to separate goes back to the 1960s
• The West feels that they are not heard by Ottawa and requests to being treated equally are not addressed.
• Unfortunately, 85% see ON and QB having all the political power because they have such a high population vs. the West, yet the West contributes the most $

• on November 17/19 Bombers played the Roughriders in Regina the Western Final.
• the Bombers win 20-13 was hard-fought, possesion of the ball was changing often.
• Zack Cularros, a recently acquired quarterback was hailed the star of the game.
• Bombers are now set to play for the Grey Cup 

Don Cherry gets the Axe

• Don Cherry, 86 years, was a hockey icon, having spent his life playing hockey and coaching at many levels.
• was a commenter and hockey analyst for Coaches Corner until he was fired on Nov.11.
• Cherry had strong opinions and comments about those not wearing a poppy were thought to be discriminatory and directed to immigrants. 
• this has created controversy, with pros and cons on how SportsNet handled his dismissal
• Natalie believes he has a right to speak out about his strong beliefs and does not feel he was singling out immigrants

Nestle Boycott

• Nestle bottled water comes from wells and lakes across Canada communities but not necessarily with consent.
• 4.7 million litres are taken, but little money is given to the communities 20 cents a litre, nestle sells a bottle of water for $2.00.

2019 Hockey Hall of Fame Inductees

• the ceremony was held on November 15 - 18 weekend to welcome inductees; all former players and coaches in various levels of hockey. 
• purpose of the ceremony is to honour inductees whose passion and love for hockey is memorable.
• Hayley Wickenheiser, the youngest inductee has been an excellent role model for kids, well deserved to be in the hall of fame
  

CN Rail Workers on Strike 

• CN Rail Workers went on strike as their demands for safer working conditions were not met.
• 3000 employees on strike as of Nov.19 as their contract ended July 23.
• staff was concerned about fatigue, working hours and working conditions.
• the strike has affected many industries such as chemical, grain, and mining.
• Tims opinion is he supports CN employees strike to improve working conditions.
